Vocal Coaching Sessions
with Guy Hughes

one-to-one lessons to hone your craft
Bringing industry-standard vocal coaching to the South-West…
Guy Hughes regularly works with professional actors and young performers to help with their vocal development and preparations for auditions. He trained in Musical Theatre and Vocal Coaching (LRAM) at the Royal Academy of Music under renowned vocal coaches Anne-Marie Speed, founder of the Voice Explained, and Mary Hammond, vocal coach to Christ Martin of Coldplay, Tom Odell and many other household names. He has taught and/or delivered workshops at some of the top drama schools in the UK (including most recently at Italia Conti, Urdang Academy and Bristol Old Vic Theatre School).
Guy has provided vocal coaching sessions for actors working in various parts of the industry, from West-End musicals (most recently, Hamilton, Victoria Palace Theatre), through to West-End plays, RSC, National Theatre and Shakespeare’s Globe. He is also a West-End Creative Learning Practitioner, providing workshops and training in ATG’s 16 London West-End Theatres. He also works as a composer, musical director and actor, allowing him to bring fresh and varied insight from the industry.

Drama School Auditions
Drama Schools have long been the gatekeepers to the industry as they can often provide the necessary showcase opportunity to move you forward. We have loads of invaluable insight into the drama school application process, including sitting on numerous audition panels in London drama schools, and many years of preparing students for drama school auditions for courses ranging from musical theatre right through to acting and screen acting. Weekly or even twice-weekly singing lessons can be a vital way to ensure that you’re able to show an audition panel that you are ‘trainable’ and that you have the potential to work in the industry. We can also help shape your choices of material for the big day, which in some cases can make all the difference.
But…
…Drama School isn’t the only way into the industry. There has been a significant shift in attitudes from casting directors in the last 5 years or so, moving away from the expectation that all professional actors must have gone through a drama school. There is a greater focus instead on what you do in the audition room: your craft as an artist.
The key is to get some great coaching in your discipline(s) and to keep on practicing it, to keep on performing. Agents do go to amateur and semi-professional performances, and these, along with self-tapes and showreels, can provide the opportunity to showcase your talents to the people who you need to see it.
